What is Organic House? Origins, Sound, and the Sunset Sound's Rise in Asia

Organic house is the most narrowly defined sub-genre of melodic dance music. It is also the most consistently programmed at sunset across the global house music economy -Tulum, Ibiza's sunset venues, Bali's Karma Beach circuit, Phuket's pool parties, Bangkok's rooftop format. If a DJ is playing on a beach at golden hour, statistically, they are playing organic house.

This is the genre pillar -what it is, where it came from, who built it, where it lives, and how Southeast Asia became one of its two global capitals.

Organic house is a sub-genre of melodic deep house defined by:

• 115–122 BPM tempo range
• Acoustic and ethnic instrumentation layered over electronic drums -guitars, flutes, didgeridoos, kalimbas, ouds, sitars, hang drums
• Field recordings -ocean, jungle, wind, fire crackle -used as ambient texture
• Long compositional arcs -6 to 10 minute tracks with patient build and release
• Tribal, ritualistic emotional register -the genre is designed for sustained focus and ceremony, not peak-hour energy
• Programming context -sunset to early evening, occasionally sunrise; rarely peak hours

The genre's emotional center is not the drop. It is the suspended middle section where the percussion locks in and the melody breathes.

The genre as we know it begins with British DJ Lee Burridge and the All Day I Dream party series, launched in Brooklyn in 2011. The party was originally a Sunday afternoon outdoor gathering -slower, melodic, hand-percussion-heavy. Burridge and his curatorial partner Matthew Dekay began releasing music in that aesthetic on the All Day I Dream label, which formalized the sound.

The label's catalog through the 2010s (releases from Yokoo, Hoj, Yotam Avni, Junior Sanchez, Lost Desert, Volen Sentir, Tim Engelhardt, Christopher Ivor, Mira Sturm) effectively defined the genre. Other labels followed -Sol Selectas, Cosmic Awakenings, Cabana Music, Mango Alley -but All Day I Dream remained the central reference.

By the late 2010s, the genre had become a global sunset format. By 2023, every major destination electronic music economy programmed an organic house room or sunset slot.

1. Lee Burridge

The genre's founding figure. UK-born, longtime resident across Tulum, Ibiza, Burning Man, and the global sunset circuit. The All Day I Dream label's editorial voice. His sets are the genre's reference recordings.

2. Hoj

American producer / DJ. Multiple All Day I Dream releases. His tracks defined the genre's "anthem" template -long melodic build, tribal percussion peak, extended outro.

3. Volen Sentir

Ukrainian. The genre's most spiritually-oriented voice. Heavy use of field recordings, religious motifs, ceremonial composition. Sets often run 4+ hours.

4. Yokoo

Korean-American producer. One of the genre's earliest defining artists. The "Yokoo & Hoj" production pair shaped the All Day I Dream aesthetic in the mid-2010s.

5. Christopher Ivor

British producer. More melodic-leaning than tribal. Bridges organic house to melodic house. Frequent SE Asia tour bookings.

6. Lost Desert

Belgian production duo. One of the more rhythmic and dance-floor-direct organic house projects. Releases consistently across Sol Selectas and All Day I Dream.

The genre needs three things to thrive: outdoor venues, sunset programming culture, and tourist economies that support destination events. Southeast Asia has all three in concentrations that few regions match.

Bali is the dominant SE Asia center for organic house. Karma Beach, La Brisa, Single Fin, Ulu Cliffhouse, La Plancha, Potato Head Beach Club, and the small Canggu venue circuit all program organic house at sunset multiple nights per week. Bali resident DJ Siggi is one of the genre's most consistent regional voices.

Bangkok is the secondary SE Asia center, with the rooftop format pioneered at Spectrum and now extended across APT 101, 24BLVD, Baccarat sunset slots, Mustache rooftops, and Veyla Bangkok (whose Gold room programs deep house with a solid DJ roster). Manila, Saigon, and Singapore have smaller but growing organic house programming, primarily at lifestyle venues and rooftop bars rather than dedicated dance rooms.

Is organic house the same as world music?

No. Organic house is electronic dance music with acoustic and ethnic instrumentation layered into it. World music is a much broader category covering traditional musics from around the world. Organic house borrows world music's instrumental palette but operates within house music's structural conventions.

Is organic house the same as tribal house?

Related but not identical. Tribal house emphasizes drum-led, percussion-heavy productions across all tempos (including faster tempos than organic house). Organic house specifically includes acoustic / non-electronic instrumentation and runs slower (115–122 BPM). The genres overlap at sunset programming.

What's the difference between organic house and melodic house?

Melodic house is faster (122–124 BPM), synth-led, and designed for late-night programming. Organic house is slower (115–122 BPM), acoustic-textured, and designed for sunset and early-evening programming. Many DJs program both in the same set, transitioning from organic at sunset to melodic at peak.

Are there Southeast Asian organic house labels?

Not yet at scale. Bali's destination-event ecosystem and Bangkok's rooftop format have produced regional DJs and producers but not yet a dedicated regional label. Expect this to change in 2026–27 as Vibe Agency moves into A&R and the Bangkok/Bali industry layer matures.
